Minister Inspects flood affected school


The Minister for Education, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Thursday,4th June, 2015, inspected the flood affected areas of the St. Mary’s Senior High School at Korle-Bu in Accra.

The rainfall that occurred the previous day caused severe flooding in many parts of Accra resulting inthe damage of some facilities in the school as well.

The Minister, who was accompanied by the Chief Director, Mr. Enoch Cobbinah, the Ag. Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Mr. Jacob Kor as well as the Director of Secondary at GES, Mr. Michael Inkoom, assessed the damage caused by the rain.

The Headmistress of the school, Madam Doris Broamson,said the flood severely affected the ground floors of the dormitories, the kitchen as well as the school compound.

The team observed that the drainage system within the school premises was inadequate in the midst of a storm drainage that passes through the school into a lagoon nearby.

The Minister, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang,directed a team of Engineers from AESL (Water and Civil Eng. Dept) to as a matter of urgency toprovide an appropriate gradient for the free flow of running water to prevent flooding of the ground floor of dormitories, while medium and long term measures are taken later to ensure lasting solution to the drainage system in the school.

She also urged the school authorities to ensure that all appropriate measures are urgently taken to ensure that there is no undue disruption of teaching and learning at the school.
