Deputy Minister Attends School on First Day


Hon. Alex Kyremeh, Deputy Minister for Education in-charge of pre-tertiary, and Member of Parliament for Techiman North, today interacted with some basic school pupils in the Ga Central District of the Greater Accra Region to commemorate their first day at school.

This was in line with the Ministry's "My First Day at School", exercise. The exercise, which commences every academic year, is conducted by officials of the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Ghana Education Service (GES).

Every first day of the academic calendar is set aside by the MoE and GES to welcome news entrants into kindergarten and class. During this period, Ministers and government officials visit basic schools and welcome them through the provision of incentives as a way of motivating and encouraging them to remain in school.

Hon. Kyeremeh, accompanied by Hon. Aristo Aryee, Municipal Chief Executive of Ga Central (MCE), during this year's exercise, visited the Anyaa D/A 1and 2 Basic Schools at Anyaa, St Justine Anglican Basic School at Ablekuman, Greta 'D' Basic School also in Ablekuman and the Motorway Cluster of Schools 1 and 2 Basic Schools in Chantan.

At the schools, the head teachers assured the Deputy Minister of their preparedness towards ensuring that the Cholera epidemic and the Ebola Viral Disease (EVD) does not pose threat to the pupils.

They informed the Deputy Minister that their schools have received copies of questionnaires sent from the GES, which schools were expected to use as instruments for screening pupils before they entered the classrooms, as part of preventive measures put in place by the Ministry and the GES.

Health officials who accompanied the Deputy Minister educated the pupils on how to avoid contracting the cholera bacteria and EVD virus.

They were given water bottles, pencils and crayon, books and other learning materials as gifts from the Ministry and the MCE.

Mr. Stephen Adu, Director of Basic Education, Mr. Samuel Ansah, Director of Teacher Education and Mrs. Dennise Welbeck, Ga Central District Director for Education accompanied the Deputy Minister on the tour.
