Committee Presents Report on unapproved fees

The Special Committee constituted by the Minister for Education, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, to investigate various allegations of unapproved fees being charged by some Heads of Second Cycle Schools across the country has presented its report to the Minister at a short ceremony in Accra.

The Inter-sectorial Committee, chaired by the Deputy Education Minister in charge of Pre-tertiary, Alex Kyeremeh, was tasked to verify the claims on charging double fees (second and third term), verify the charging of unapproved fees and recommend appropriate sanctions.

Receiving the report, the Minister, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, extended her appreciation to the Committee for the good work done. She stressed the need for all headmasters to adhere strictly to the policies of the Ministry of Education.

“I found the recommendations to be useful. We will study the full report and apply the sanctions as such”, she said.

She noted that as much as the Ministry appreciates the role of the PTAs, they would not be allowed to charge arbitrary fees, all in the name of development of their respective schools. She explained that such practices put undue financial burden on parents.

The Minister also called for the urgent review of the code of Conduct for the Ghana Education Service to reflect current trends.
