Dr. Opoku Prempeh inaugurates Council of Chartered Institute of Taxation

The Minister for Education, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has inaugurated the governing council of the Chartered Institute of Taxation, Ghana (CITG), with a call members to streamline the activities of person involved in taxation to bring about professionalism.

In a speech read on his behalf by the Minister of State in charge of Tertiary Education, Prof. Kwesi Yankah, he said the inauguration of the Council marked the culmination of years of preparation, development and enactment of legislation to give effect to the Chartered Institute of Taxation, Ghana as the sole body with the legal authority to promote the study of taxation and regulate the practice of taxation in the country.

According to him, the object and functions of the Institute as provided in the CITG Act placed onerous responsibilities on the Council to transform the Institute into a vibrant and dynamic body that will serve its intended purpose.

“Primarily, this is to contribute effectively to the development of a transparent and efficient tax system in the country to enhance national productivity and generate the requisite resources for the betterment of the lives of our people,” he noted.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh noted with concern that several persons of varied training and experience operate within the tax space in the country without adherence to any compelling standards and professional etiquette specific to to exigencies of the taxation profession.
