The Minister for Education, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh has paid a working visit to Breman Jamra, a community in the Asikuma Odoben Brakwa District, in the Central Region where a school building constructed by the community collapsed and killed six kindergarten children.

The Hon. Minister, who was there to assess the damage to life and property, was accompanied on the visit by, Mr. Enoch Cobbina, Chief Director of the Ministry of Education, Mr. Joseph Kor, Director-General of the Ghana Education Service and other officials.

The Hon.Minister met with the Jamrahene, Nana Kwao Fosu III, the traditional elders, the bereaved families and Hon.Anthony Effah, the Member of Parliament for Asikuma Odoben Brakwa, at the chief’s palace where he was briefed by the chief on events leading to the tragedy.

In his remarks, Dr. Opoku Prempeh  said  government was saddened by the  tragedy   for which reason he had to  cancel all appointments to be with them and  expressed  his condolences on behalf  of His Excellency the President, Nana Akufo Addo, the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service.

“The tragedy that has befallen you  this moment,is not only a tragedy of your community alone but a national tragedy  which  government is very much concerned about and for which reason His Excellency the President  has asked me to come and assess the situation and also to commiserate with you.” He said.

He assured the community of government’s plans to improve existing infrastructure in the area to prevent such a thing from happening in the future and presented some cash donation to the bereaved families towards the burial of the deceased children.

When he visited the scene of the tragedy, the Hon.Minister observed that this unfortunate tragedy could have been avoided through professional advice and proper supervision  during the construction of the school.

He said such a situation must not be allowed to happen again and instructed the contractor to be summoned immediately to start work on a new kindergarten and six-unit primary school block still under construction.

As an interim measure Hon. Opoku Prempeh charged the District Director of Education as a matter of urgency to make alternate arrangement for a conducive classroom for the children whilst the issue of a new classroom block was being addressed.

From the scene of the tragedy, he visited three of the victims who were on admission at Our Lady of Grace Hospital at Breman Asikuma to see how they were recuperating .He wished them speedy recovery and assured the parents that government would foot all the medical bills.

Later in an interview with the media, the  Minister  noted that there was the need for collaboration among all stakeholders in the educational sector and bemoaned the lack of cooperation between the sector and the chiefs in the Breman Jamra area, as the chiefs were not even aware of the contractor who was responsible for building that collapsed.

He however, assured the public that he would ensure strict supervision and monitoring of all projects under his Ministry to ensure  excellent work.
