Sunyani Polytechnic Inaugurates New H.C.I.M block


His Excellency, President John Dramani Mahama, has inaugurated the remodeled Hotel Catering and Institutional Management (H.C.I.M.) block of the Sunyani Polytechnic in the Brong Ahafo region.

At the inauguration, President Mahama recalled his pronouncement of the conversion of the ten polytechnics to technical universities at Ho in the Volta Region. He said the purpose was to train technical graduates to acquire skills which would be relevant to industry.

President Mahama, noted that the technical universities Bill has been laid before Parliament for approval when the house reconvenes in May 2016.

He explained that a committee of experts and the National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE) upon consultation and through research decided on the gradual enrolment of the polytechnics to technical universities through a given criteria.

He noted that polytechnics which would not be able to meet the criteria would be assisted to enable them attain technical university status.

He called for close collaboration between industry and academia to develop and fine tune curriculum of the technical universities as well as enhance the technical and entrepreneurial skills of graduates.

President Mahama stated that the four-storey GETFund funded HCIM block consisted of a number of facilitates including changing rooms, a restaurant, staff offices and other ancillary facilities, admonishing users of the facility to practice good maintenance culture.

Earlier in a welcome speech, the Vice Rector of the Sunyani Polytechnic, Dr. Kojo Adinkrah, appealed to the President to intercede on behalf of the institution to enable fast completion of other GETFund projects on the campus.

He announced that the school would soon introduce programmes in Agricultural Engineering, Management, and other technical courses.
