Ministry visits schools gutted by Fire


Officials from the Ministry of Education (MoE) and Ghana Education Service (GES) have visited Ghana Secondary and Oti Boateng Senior High Schools in Koforidua in the Eastern Region, to ascertain the degree of destruction of some dormitories in the schools.

Preliminary investigations by the schools revealed that, the destruction of the dormitories was caused by natural disasters.

Led by the Deputy Minister for Education in charge of Pre-tertiary Education, Hon. Alex Kyeremeh, the team found out that two dormitories were gutted by fire, which affected 200 female first year students of the Ghana Secondary School. The affected students also lost their entire educational materials, which included stationery, beds and mattresses.

At Oti Boateng Senior High School, two of the boys blocks were also razed down by fire making it inhabitable by the affected students.

Hon. Alex Kyeremeh assured the affected schools of governments continued commitment and support to the development of education, stating the need for the ministry to immediately make a short term plan for the affected students to be housed before resumption of next academic term. He added that the Ministry was anxiously waiting for the technical report so that it could take a decision on the gutted dormitories to enable it continue to provide quality education.

The Deputy Minister used the opportunity to advise final year student of the schools to eschew cheating during examinations and urged them to be disciplined at all times.

The Chief Director of the Ministry, Mr. Enoch H. Cobbinah, commended the heads of the affected schools for been proactive in handling the challenges. He urged the heads of the schools to better their academic performance with premium on mathematics and science related subjects.

The headmaster of Ghana Secondary and Oti Boateng Senior schools, Rev. Osei Donkor and Ms. Adu Labi, both assured the officials that they would continue to work hard with other stakeholders in the promotion of quality education. They were grateful to all well-wishers and philanthropists who assisted them.
