Education Minister confers with vodofone CEO


The Minister for Education, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has conferred with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Vodafone Ghana, Mr. Haris Broumidis to exchange opinion on a proposed e-learning project in schools.

An administrative Manager of Vodofone Ghana, Angela Mensah Opoku, who briefed the Minister on the project, said they were still working on the proposal and when ready, it would be presented to the Minister for study.

According to her, the programme would last for six months in each school to enable the children e-learn both at home and in school making maximum use of their time.

Taking her turn, the Minister requested vodafone for an interim report on the project for her to study.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said she aware that vodafone has been working with CENDLOS..

She expressed her happiness at the fact that children through the project, can learn anywhere they find themselves.

She asked the vodofone management to put in their mind such questions as: what is it that can be done to ensure both teachers and pupils benefit from the project? What is the bottom line in the project? What are the negative effects on the children? What has been the success story of such projects worldwide? What has been the challenges? How will children especially in the rural communities benefit and how will it enhance the learning of Mathematics and Science?

In conclusion, Prof.Opoku-Agyemang asked the team to ensure that the objectives of the project were made very clear whilst its sustainability is well spelt out.

In a brief comment the CEO of vodafone assured the Minister of their commitment to carry out the project as well as its sustainability to contribute to the quality of education using technology.

Whilst the Minister’s team included the Directors of ICT and Public Relations, Messrs. Francis Avugbey and Dan Osman Mwin respectively as well as a Public Relations Officer, Ms Matilda Tetttey, the vodafone delegation included the Head of External Affairs, Mr. Gayheart Mensah.
